Left to Right: Debbie and Terry

 Debbie Martinez, Education Coordinator/Office Administrator

Debbie Martinez has been working with the NAMI Affiliate in the Maricopa County area for almost two years. Debbie manages the Family-to-Family and Family Support Group programs. Debbie previously worked in Human Resources for the State of Arizona for various Departments over the last 30 years. Her career with NAMI Valley of the Sun started after she took a Family-to-Family class, which she says, was life-changing. “To typically fill these classes four months in advance of being able to provide them, really emphasizes the importance of what we do here at NAMI.” Debbie recently became certified as a Family-to-Family teacher and has stated that giving back to the community and providing people with education and hope is one of the greatest rewards of her life.

Terry McDermott, Education Coordinator

Terry has been working with NAMI Valley of the Sun for three months as the coordinator of peer programs. He manages the In Our Own Voice, Connection peer support group and Peer to Peer programs. He previously was in the US Navy, taught junior high Algebra and spent 30 years with Snap On Tools. His career with NAMI began when he took a Family to Family class in 2007. Since then he became an IOOV presenter in 2008, took the NAMI Peer to Peer class in 2011, became a NAMI Connection facilitator in 2011 and an IOOV state trainer in 2013. The IOOV presentation has been proven to reduce the stigma of mental illness and NAMI VOS has had many opportunities to do that with high schools, universities, nursing schools, churches, providers, police departments, etc. Last year our affiliate did 77 presentations and so far this year, as of the end of June, we’ve already done 63 presentations. Terry has expressed , that coordinating peer programs is one of the most fulfilling opportunities he has ever had.
